Acne

Acne is a disease that affects the skin’s oil glands. Sometimes hair, sebum (made by the oil gland), and skin cells clump together forming a plug. When this happens, bacteria in the plug causes swelling and this results in a pimple when the plug starts to break down.

You will normally find pimples on the face, neck, back, chest, and shoulders. While acne does not result in any serious health complication, scars can result if not treated.

Oil glands under the skin make an oily substance called sebum which is used to carries dead skin cells to the surface of the skin. The small holes or pores in your skin connect to the glands by a canal called a follicle. The follicle also has a thin hair which grows out to the skin. The follicle can get plugged and this is what creates the pimple.
