Blood Disorders

Anemia is the most common disorder of the blood. Anemia is defined as a deficiency of hemoglobin, a protein found inside red blood cells (RBCs). There are several kinds of anemia. For someone who has anemia, the homoglobal level would roughly be (level varies depending on source): less than 13.5 gram/100ml (for men) and less than 12.0 gram/100ml (for women).

Hemoglobin normally carries oxygen from the lungs to the tissues. Without sufficient hemoglobal, the body suffers from lack of oxygen (hypoxia). With oxygen, all sorts of complications can occur. The human body requires oxygen for survival.

Anemia can be caused in a number of ways. For example, a lack of iron in the body will result in low red blood cell production, also known as ineffective hematopoiesis. Red Blood cells production can also be hampered in other ways. Excessive bleeding also results in anemia. In addition, red blood cell can be destroyed (hemolysis) in a number of ways.
