Lung Cancer

Lung cancer is a type of cancer that forms in tissues of the lung. The disease is the second most common form of cancer.  Lung cancer causes more cancer-related deaths in the United States than any other form of cancer. While anyone can get lung cancer, cigarette smoking is the leading cause of lung cancer. The disease affects more than 200,000 Americans each year.

While there are many types of lung cancer, two major types of lung cancer are most commonly diagnosed. It is important to diagnose which type a patient has because they are treated differently. The two major types of lung cancer are:

  • ¬†non-small cell – Non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) arises from epithelial cells (this is the most common type)
  • small cell -¬† Small cell lung cancer begins in either the hormone-producing cells or nerve cells¬†of the lung.

When¬† cells in the lung grow out of control they form form a tumor or mass in the lung. This tumor can be benign or malignant.¬† If the tumor is malignant, it is a cancerous. Cancerous tumors can spread to other parts of the body.¬† Cancer is treated depending on the “stage”, which is a way to descrive how advanced the disease is.¬† Treatments for lung cancer often include chemotherapy, radiation and surgery.
